The Danish princess Ulrika Eleonora and Charles XI of Sweden were engaged for five years while their countries were at war. Their marriage in 1680 confirmed the peace. It was long believed that this portrait was an engagement present, sent to Stockholm from Copenhagen. However, the Frenchman Jacques d’Agar did not settle in Denmark until 1683, and if he really is the artist the painting must be of a later date, as the golden crowns on the blue mantle also suggest.
