BiographyMarco Basaiti was a Venetian of Greek ancestry,
born around 1470 and active between 1496 and
1530, when he died in Venice. He was a pupil of
Alvise Vivarini, and later of Giovanni Bellini,
from whom he took both his style and his subjects.
He has also been seen as a rival of Bellini,
and some of the latter’s paintings have even been
confused with the oeuvre of Basaiti, notably the
Dead Christ/Christ Crowned with Thorns (NM
1726, cat. no. 120) in the Italian collection of the
Nationalmuseum. Basaiti is best known for his
paintings Call of the Sons of Zebedee (1510) and
Christ Praying in the Garden (1510 or 1516) in the
Gallerie dell’Accademia, Venice.
