In the summer of 1656, Queen Christina left Rome and travelled to France, where she secretly deliberated with Cardinal Mazarin on a war against Naples. This drawing is a study for an engraving, never executed, to document her grand entrance. The queen is seen on horseback in the foreground, holding a walking stick. The press reported that the canopy was carried in front of, rather than above, the Queen because her horse shied at it.
